Mr. Baladina was born during a trip with friends to Egypt. While interacting with locals, one word kept coming up in conversation: “Baladina.” Curious about its meaning, he learned it literally means “our land.” Informally, when used to refer to someone, it expresses familiarity, local identity, and a sense of belonging.
This quickly became an inside joke within the group, since Mr. Baladina had no personal connection to the region.
A few days later, something unexpected happened. During a bus ride from Cairo to southern Egypt, police came on board to check the passports of all foreign passengers. Strangely, he was the only one who wasn’t asked. In that moment, It became clear that he physically resembled the local population to the point that he was assumed to be one of them.
That experience captured the spirit of what would later become Baladina: a nostalgic connection to places we’ve never been and times we’ve never lived, but that somehow feel like home.
